Dahlias in AUGUST

This is a busy month for the dahlia grower.  The plants grow at an alarming rate at this time of the year.  They are given additional Potash and the covers are pulled over to protect the emerging blooms from the weather.

The incessant rain has caused puddles to form everywhere 1 / 2.
Dahlias are progressing on target for the show dates 1, 2, 3.

A little earlier than normal but time to pull the covers over the dahlias. The covers are secured along one side of the tunnel over the winter months and on a calm day they are pulled over the dahlias with the aid of two ropes.
The covers measure some 60 by 30 feet even so the whole job takes only two hours.
As easy as 1,   2,   3,   4, and 5.

Cupids are flowering early which will allow me to adjust bloom size.

Most of the views are of the tunnel.
Here is where I grow small cactus dahlias.  The plants in the foreground are Paul and Linda's Chester, note their characteristic yellow appearance, nothing to worry about, normal for the Chester family of dahlias.

Time to apply additional Potash around the plants, this will strengthen up the stems of the dahlias and enhance the colour of the blooms. Potash normally takes 12 days to have any effect.

Dahlias in the tunnel are showing quite a lot of colour now.  Peach, Candy, Wootton Cupid and Barbarry Bluebird are coming on like wildfire.
