Dahlia plants need a lot of water but most blooms will mark if exposed to rain

Porous pipe, this has been a great benefit to dahlia growers. It is manufactured in England from reconstituted car tyres. Working pressure is 7.5 psi. it does not work at high pressure. At 7.5 psi water seeps from the pipe into the soil. Maximum length in one run is 50 metres but if water is supplied from both ends the maximum length becomes 100 metres. Water penetrates the soil 30 - 45 cm either side of the pipe depending on the type of soil. The pipe can be layed on the surface between rows of dahlia plants or buried.

Porous Pipe laid between the dahlia rows and all ready for connecting to the water supply. Water is supplied from an outbuilding which houses the filters, pressure regulators and dilutors

Porous Pipe in action watering my dahlia plants

Since Porous Pipe cannot be coupled directly on to the mains water supply it has to be fitted with pressure regulators which keep the pressure constant at 7.5 psi (1 in photo). There is a danger that the inside of the pipe could become clogged and with this in mind 150 micron filters are included inline with the pressure regulators (2 in photo). I also use inline dilutors to supply chemical feeds to the dahlia plants (3 in photo).Pressure regulators  Filters and Dilutors
